Spittoon, from Spotted Nyonya series
This is a Spittoon. It was designed by Hans Tan.
This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from Hans Tan as part of Beauty—Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial.
Tan has used a batik-inspired technique to transform the traditional decoration of this spittoon into a pattern meant to invoke feelings of heritage, consumption, and materiality. Tan masks the outer surface and carefully sandblasts the unmasked portion, revealing the delicate white porcelain below. The process highlights fragments of color from the original surface. The Spotted Nyonya series employs a pattern of dots.
It is credited Courtesy of Hans Tan.
