Emigre, Inc. is an award-winning digital type foundry and design studio founded in Berkeley, California by Zuzana Licko and Rudy VanderLans. Originally launched as Emigre magazine, the studio—which consisted of Emigre Graphics (1984) and Emigre Fonts (1985) before incorporating under Emigre, Inc. (1994)—became an influential platform for digital typography, graphic design, and critical writing. Through both its type foundry and publishing activities, Emigre helped define the look of digital culture in the 1980s and 1990s. Its typefaces, created by Licko and collaborators, were among the first to be designed specifically for personal computers, foregrounding the aesthetic possibilities of low-resolution technology. Emigre’s work has been widely recognized for challenging conventions of legibility, authorship, and design publishing, positioning the firm as a key innovator in the history of digital design.
