American photographer and author. He studied painting in Europe, returning to New York, where he met Alfred Stieglitz and soon took up photography. He exhibited at the 1910 Photo-Secessionist exhibition, and worked between San Francisco, London, and New York during the course of his life. His later work focused increasingly on painting and sculpture.
