Inclusive Edge Canopy, 2006

This is a Project. It was manufactured by Omid Kamvari, Asif Amir Khan, Pavlos Sideris (designers), Michael Hensel, Achim Menges (tutors), Architectural Association,. It is dated 2006. Its medium is lycra/spandex, brass eyelets, steel cable, cable ties, cable grips, spanner.

The Inclusive Edge canopy creates public space for the favela community of Pilar in Recife, Brazil, by providing shade at a low cost. Material is stretched over the street and fixed to points on existing trees, roofs, water tanks, poles, and shop fronts. A flexible space emerges under the canopy, where children play in the shade, workers eat lunch, and neighbors gather to converse. The canopy and space underneath engender pride and a sense of community, and the identifiable yellow color of the canopy acts as a neighborhood landmark.
