Textile, Mint Julep

This is a Textile. It was designed by Dorothy Wright Liebes.

This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from Metropolitan Museum of Art as part of A Dark, A Light, A Bright: The Designs of Dorothy Liebes.

It is dated ca. 1940. Its medium is handwoven cotton, rayon, and metallic yarns. It is a part of the Exhibitions department.


Mint Julep was a "show panel" exhibited by Liebes throughout her career. It features many signature Liebes effects, including multiple types and textures of metallic yarn, the inlay technique used to create an irregular rhythm of stripes, and looped pile to add texture and highlight the reflective properties of the metallic yarns even further.

It is credited Metropolitan Museum of Art, Gift of Dorothy Liebes Design Inc., 1973.
