Foot Tub

This is a Foot tub. It is dated 19th century and we acquired it in 1978. Its medium is molded tin-glazed earthenware, metal (insert). It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

During the nineteenth century, strategic bathing was energetically promoted by the medical community as a treatment for a range of maladies including common colds, fever, rheumatic diseases and infertility. Immersing oneself in warm or cool water could soothe or invigorate the body, as required. While not everyone could afford a therapeutic trip to the seaside or had the resources to heat water for a large private bath tub, small foot baths were attainable by all classes.

This object was donated by Jerome W. Gratenstein. It is credited Gift of Jerome W. Gratenstein.

Its dimensions are

24.5 x 60.5 x 41.4 cm (9 5/8 x 23 13/16 x 16 5/16 in.)
